Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
By Steve Turner of Tiny Tots Online Baby Shop
I thought I would pen my thoughts and part of my experiences as a sufferer of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it effected me as an ex Uk Army soldier. For 19 years I served with varying regiments in the Army and of course during those times was involved in many an incident which left me both physically and mentally scarred. The problem was that although you could see and feel the physical injuries the mental injuries simply piled on top of each other. As the years went on the physical injuries healed but the further mental injuries caused as a result of other incidents simply stacked on top of each other like a deck of cards. Until the day the deck of cards collapsed and I became a person who was unable to function without braking into tears and unable to contain my emotions and suffering with all the usual PTSD symptoms, Nightmares, flashbacks, etc. I was diagnosed with PTSD and extremely quickly was medically discharged form the Army which i believe to this day was wrong. My family have been the one constant thing that has helped me through all of this and without them I very much doubt I would be here today. There have been suicide attempts which thankfully did not work. After several years of tears I now help with my wife and daughters baby products website and feel much better about the future and what it can bring. My advice for those who are going through a similar experience is to hang on in there, as eventually things do get better and although the symptoms do persist, with the right support and medication, by taking one day at a time the hill that you feel you are climbing everyday will eventually level out. It takes courage to admit to all this. I bet you took a lot of flak. Just wondering though, what do you feel the army should have done instead of discharging you, since sending you back to the front would probably not have been wise?

Hi Nick yes i did get a lot of flack considering i was on accelerated promotion, but as soon as this information was leaked by the army medical services it quickly became common knowledge and within months i was discharged. What the Army should have done is treated the symptoms and dealt with the mental injuries in the same way they would have treated a physical injury. The problem is with the current situation in Afghanistan and our forces either USA or UK is that there are so many traumatised service men and woman who suffer from PTSD who will eventually end up on civvy street for one reason or another. In a recent survey 1 in 10 homeless people in London were ex servicemen with PTSD and the number in jail are staggering.
